We are loosing the fragrance of Indian beauty because of urbanization, western culture influence and downfall of traditional joint family systems.. Here it comes to Manduva logillu.

The way joint families are disappearing now a days the same way manduva logillu also disappearing.

The Manduva Logillu represents a joint family system of Coastal districts of AP & Southern states.

The Manduva houses typically had a common space that was open to the sky. This allowed light and air to stream into the house. During the rainy season, the water is drained off with a pit and pipe drainage system that is usually installed. The homes have gorgeous carved main doors which are called simhadwaram.

These were built with all natural materials, gummy soil, red bricks, rose / Teak wood and roof covered with Vadapalli / Mangalore red tiles . Mostly square or rectangular in shape with a open to sky central courtyard supported by carved wooden small to giant pillars, surrounded / spanned by rooms for various purposes in all four directions. Central courtyard will let the air pass through and for natural light. Generally courtyard floor level is lower than the other building to collect the rain water. All occasions were / are celebrated, all discussions to happen here, in this central courtyard.

Manduva Logili houses are often prone to attacks of white ants. Its maintenance is very expensive. Today it is almost impossible to get huge wooden logs in the market, due to tightening of laws related to forestry.

Currently these types of homes are a rare sight. Nuclear family systems and urbanization have slowly led to Manduva homes fading out. Like all other traditional homes, Manduva homes require quite a bit of expenditure and special skills for maintenance and renovation. Families that haven’t been able to take care of the upkeep have had to let these homes go. Few groups, however, have been putting in special efforts to ensure that they’re preserved.
